Walter bows out after 49 years with Ford.
It is an incredible achievement to be able to retire from a job which has been a part of your life for nearly 50 years and that is the case for Walter Evans from Llanfair Caereinion. Walter has just served his last customer from the parts department at Greenhous Ford in Newtown and now he looks forward to some creative work in the garden producing a vegetable patch and more dog walking in the beautiful countryside around where he lives.

Walter left school at 15 and entered into the motor trade with WR Davies Ford of Welshpool in 1967.  He was initially on a 3 month trial period which he says must has been alright as he stayed for 49 years!  After a year he moved with W R Davies to Newtown as they opened a dealership there and it has been his place of work ever since.

Wendy Atkinson is the Parts Manager at Greenhous Ford and she remembers Walter from her early days, some 14 years ago saying: “Walter was one of the first members of staff at Ford Newtown and he has been a superb parts advisor to countless numbers of customers. He is a delightful man who has always got on quietly with his job.  We will all miss him terribly.  He is part of the fabric of the business.”

Walter is not someone who is inclined to move around still living in the same house he was born into.  He says: “I enjoy my life and especially coming to work and meeting the customers.  Every single day has been different and that makes it even more worthwhile.  Now it is time for me to keep fit with the changes I want to make to my garden and walking my faithful dog around the woods near my home.  I am very grateful to all of my colleagues for the send-off they have given me.”

The staff made a big fuss of Walter with a party in the showroom at the end of his last day of work.  He is pictured (centre) with Wendy Atkinson and dealer principal, Tony Mellish.
